Mummie Mysteries places deliberately made Egyptian animal mummies beside bodies preserved by Frisian conditions, helping families compare purpose, material and environment.

What you need to know

A wrapped cat or lamb can make “mummy” feel synonymous with ancient Egyptian ritual. Natuurmuseum Fryslân sets a second trail beside that familiar story: bats, rats and other animals in Friesland can also be preserved by dry, enclosed or otherwise unusual conditions. Children can therefore compare two mechanisms—intentional preparation and accidental environmental preservation—and ask why a body becomes evidence. Mummie Mysteries remains on view through 22 November. Admission is €14 for adults, €7 for ages four to seventeen and free for ages zero to three; the UnderWaterSafari costs an additional €4 when capacity allows. Hokimi does not think parents need to market the galleries as horror. Stronger questions are who preserved this, what conditions made it last and how researchers know. Surprise then becomes a method of observation rather than a quick scare.

  • The exhibition continues through 22 November 2026.
  • It includes Egyptian and Frisian animal mummies.
  • Adults cost €14; ages 4–17 cost €7.
  • The address is Schoenmakersperk 2 in Leeuwarden.

Hokimi field note: Ask first whether a child is comfortable seeing real animal remains; do not use a sudden reveal as a bravery test. Compare two specimens by purpose, environment and evidence, then decide whether the extra UnderWaterSafari fits. Reserve busy visits online and check separate availability for add-ons.
